At a conference discussing the company’s future plans, franchise-speaking, MGM’s Mary Parent mentioned the possibility of continuing the “Rocky” series.
Parent apparently announced the news at Cannes, and got some “very enthusiastic responses” from the audience, says IndieWire.
Hmmm. Why exactly were people excited by that prospect?
As I watching “Rambo” (enjoyed it a lot more the second time, too!) on DVD the other night, I thought - for about 5 minutes - whether Rocky, like Rambo, might return for another round (looks like Rambo’s coming back again).
But then I realized, Rocky said his final goodbyes in ‘’Rocky Balboa’’ – Stallone intentionally made sure that was the conclusion of the series. There was nothing more to tell. Rocky’s journey had come to an end. We had come full circle. The End.
“Rambo”, on the other hand, is still evolving… there’s probably a couple more adventures in him yet. There was nothing final about John J’s last mission at all. Nothing.
But for all intents and purposes, there’s nothing more for Rocky Balboa to do – besides run his restaurant, get to know his kid better, and reminisce about the good ol’ days. And who wants to see that on film?
So what on earth would a “Rocky 6” be about? And would Stallone even be in it? (Though earlier this year the trades did report that Stallone was looking at scripts for both new ‘’Rambo’’ and ‘’Rocky’’ movies – strangely enough).
I’d say if MGM are considering anything, it’s a spin-off with Rocky’s kid (Milo Ventimiglia played him in “Balboa”) – learning how to belt the bejesus out of a hanging piece of meat. Either that, or they’re going to – as Han would say “I have a bad feeling about this!” – remake the original film. Wouldn’t put it past them.
